Prime Minister Modi is currently in Cyprus. This is the country which was divided into two parts after the Turkish attack in 1974. The northern side is under the control of Turkey and the Turkish Cypriots, while the southern two-thirds is governed by the internationally recognised Greek Cypriot government.

His visit comes at a crucial time, especially when Turkey — a close friend of Pakistan — is strengthening its ties with Islamabad. The President of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, honoured Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi with the country’s highest civilian honour award, the Grand Cross of the Order of Makarios III.

This is the first visit of an Indian prime minister to Cyprus in the last 23 years. Before this, the last Indian prime minister to visit was Atal Bihari Vajpayee in 2002, and before him, Indira Gandhi came in 1982. Modi’s visit highlights India's growing bond with Cyprus and its role in countering Turkey’s growing influence alongside Pakistan. Cyprus has always supported India. Be it the issue of Kashmir or India's strict stand on terrorism.

Why Cyprus Matters to India

 1. Diplomatic Balance Against Turkey

Cyprus has a longstanding conflict with Turkey, mainly due to the invasion in 1974 that divided the island. Turkey has backed Pakistan on Kashmir and terrorism-related involvement against India. So strengthening ties with Cyprus is a way for India to balance Turkey’s growing role in the region.

2. Gateway to Europe

Cyprus is situated near Syria and Turkey, making it a major gateway to European markets. Although geographically in Asia, it is a member of the European Union (EU). Cyprus is therefore a crucial location for India's commercial and diplomatic activities in Europe.

 3. Investment Hub

For years, Cyprus has been a preferred destination for Indian companies to invest safely in European and Middle Eastern markets. India's growing economic links with Cyprus, especially in areas like energy, technology, and digital services, are highlighted by Modi's visit.

4. Boost to IMEC and Energy Cooperation

An important link of the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) is Cyprus. PM Modi wants to use this corridor to establish a closer connection with Cyprus. Furthermore, Cyprus's geographical location makes it a key energy hub, offering opportunities for collaboration in oil and gas exploration in the Mediterranean.
